For many of us, the fall season is a time to enjoy the cooler weather and get ready for winter. While we might be wrapping up warm with sweaters and scarves, our kids are also getting ready to enjoy another season of fun.

There are so many ways that you can dress up your children in fun costumes and accessories this holiday season. Here are some ideas:

You can make costumes by creating them yourself!

You can use your imagination and your kids’ interests as a starting point. If they’re into animals, maybe they’d like to be an elephant or tiger! If they love their favorite storybook character, why not try dressing up as that?

Your little girl might want to be Cinderella or Rapunzel; your little boy could go for Peter Pan or Captain Hook. Kids love bright and colorful costumes so think about using some of those favorite colors in their costume—you could even make them their very own superhero cape!

Rainbow wings.

If you have a child that loves rainbows, or if you just want to see a rainbow in their eyes, make some rainbow wings for them. All you need is construction paper and scissors. You can trace the shape of your child’s body onto the construction paper and cut it out, or if they’re small enough (or if you’re adventurous), just wing it!

Attach these wings to their back by folding over the bottom edge of each wing and taping them down with masking tape or duct tape in an x-shape. Then secure them to your kid’s back using more tape on top of this x-shape. Now they are ready to go outside and play!

Fairy

Making a fairy costume is a great way to get your kids excited about dressing up. If they like fairies, they’ll love the idea of having their own fairy wand. Use these steps to make one:

  • Gather materials that are easy to find and cheap, including:
  • A small branch or twig from outside
  • A green pipe cleaner (or other type of wire)
  • Two pieces of yarn or string in two different colors, one for each end of the stick

If you’re not up to making your own or you’re pressed for time, you can always get a ready-made costume from websites like Chasing Fireflies.

Playful crown.

  • Cut out a crown shape from cardboard or paper, and use a glue gun to attach a ribbon around the inside edge of the crown.
  • Glue glitter onto the top of each tip of your cardboard crown to make it sparkle! You can also use this technique on paper or fabric if you want to add some extra pizzazz.

My ultimate goal with this post was to inspire parents to be creative. I know how hard it can be to find the time and money to buy costumes for your kids, but there are so many other options out there! With just a little bit of imagination, you can make something special without spending much at all. The best part? Your kids will love whatever you put together.
